Here we go…I’ll say right off the bat, things are not looking good for snow fans. For snow, you need cold air at the surface, obviously. That can happen in two ways; one, cold air already in place before the storm system arrives; or two, through a process known as dynamic cooling, where the storm [...]

A great weekend! Lots of sunshine and temperatures up in the 50s….That all ends on Monday…In recent days, we have discussed a potential winter weather event, early next week, for parts of the southeast. As usual, predicting snow in the south is very complicated. Plenty of challenges for this one…Here’s the thinking as of tonight: [...]

A few pockets of drizzle and light snow early this morning. Snow began falling in Grenada at 7 o’clock. Temperatures are above freezing, so no travel problems. Most of the precip should taper off by mid morning; day time warming will decrease humidity, which will cause the precip to evaporate before reaching the ground…Otherwise, partially cloudy today, with [...]

Greenwood has, at least, tied their record low for this date, which is 20 degrees; the record was originally set in 1965 …Still waiting on the official low to see if the record was broken…The good news, we will warm quickly thanks to a good supply of sunshine; the sun angle becomes higher as spring approaches, giving us more direct radiation, which [...]

We only made it into the low 40s today, which is close to our average low for this time of year; afternoon temperatures are running 18 to 20 cooler than normal!…It has been an amazing winter; south Mississippi received measurable snow, this morning, for the third time since November! Will they put up a “4-spot” before it’s all said and done??? We’ll see… A cold [...]

More south Mississippi snow early this morning. Between a dusting and one half-inch in Copiah and Smith Counties, and a little less than one half-inch for Florence in Rankin County. Seems like the accumulating snow stayed south of Interstate 20. Sunshine returns, state-wide today, but we stay unseasonably cool. Only warming to the low 40s this [...]

I want to take a minute to clear the air(no pun intended)…It’s amazing how the word, “snow” can cause such a stir in folks. My goal on this blog is to provide the most specific explanation possible, which will hopefully minimize confusion and forecast ambiguity; throwing out a bunch of precip percentages, and cliché weather [...]

Lots to talk about this morning! Let’s start with some good news…The sunshine is breaking out; a little sun will sure feel good! But clouds fill back in by this afternoon, as yet another storm system approaches from the west; snow is falling over much of Texas, where several inches are likely for places like Waco, Austin, Abilene, and Lubbock. The system moves [...]

Our weekend spring fling is coming to an end…Cold air is heading back into to the state; we will hold in the upper 40s and low 50s through this afternoon, then mid 40s tomorrow. Another storm system will move through Texas tonight and tomorrow, dropping several inches of snow over much of the state. We will [...]

The warming trend continues! We have a shot at reaching 60 later this afternoon, as the upper level flow becomes west to east, cutting us off from the cold air up north; mid 60s tomorrow and Sunday!…High clouds are moving in from the southwest, as moisture returns; looks like a mix of sun and clouds [...]
